Elisions of Race

One of my favorite topics is the way in which serious discussions of race are elided and I note that in many Latin American discussions of race, nation, and culture race is invoked or evoked only to be morphed somehow into a question of culture. I have had various flashes of illumination on this: how U.S.  discussions of “multiculturalism” and “diversity” do the same thing, and how discussions which purport to be about race and seem incoherent on the topic suddenly make more sense if one replaces the word race with the word culture. These are notes toward a discussion. I want to unravel all of these threads.
