This post makes a good point. It will, or should help me turn my conference presentation into an paper. Even if I do not actually use the term chaotic terrains, it will help to keep it in mind.

I actually think the apparent need to assimilate the unassimilable explains a lot of the cultural conflict in the US today–the need to make sense out of multiracial reality overagainst the unassimilability of the multiracial reality in our categories for thinking about it. If we could just try to stop ourselves from thinking that learning a generalization is sufficient for understanding the world, we’d have it a lot easier. It would mean not being frightened of the individual case that didn’t fit the pattern, though, which many people find hard.
