This first chapter is elegantly written and very well informed. Consider the Middle Passage as the founding moment of modernity, and not the 18th century ideas of freedom; remember that Black labour is what made possible the high standard of living some had in the 19th century. Indeed, it is slavery which makes possible the bourgeois freedom of the 19th century and was the economic basis of the French Revolution (James, Williams).

Non Western modernisms are not alternative, but are rather among its founding moments.
