I do not believe I must post on Vianna’s book since I remember it, and especially what it says about Freyre, so well. Meanwhile, I have never read Girard, Violence and the Sacred seriously, but perhaps I should. Keywords in addition to violence, sacred and origin are scapegoat, desire, and mimetic double bind.

Some have used Girard to talk about the nation–but have they done in a way useful to me? I should read the book. Or perhaps I should read Deceit, Desire and the Novel, and see what light it sheds on Cecilia Valdés. Is this novel, are these novels some kind of mediators, like bad fiction for Emma Bovary or the Amadís for Don Quixote — is it fruitful to look at them in this way?
