+ It is suggested that postmodernists misread Descartes, who doubts so as to establish certainty but is also undertaking an ethical enterprise. To begin with the self, and rid the self of unwarranted assumptions, is to become conscious, and that is hardly reactionary.

+ And Kant, in “What is Enlightenment,” is arguing that one should think for oneself and not repeat from authority. That, too, is hardly reactionary, it is said.
